The straightforward difference

10 AWG has about 60% more cross-sectional area than 12 AWG, which is why it's rated for meaningfully more current — 35A vs 25A copper ampacity — and carries less voltage drop over the same distance for the same load. It's also thicker, stiffer to work with, and costs more per foot, which is exactly why you don't just default to the bigger size "to be safe": it's a real cost and installation-effort trade-off, not a free upgrade.

When a 20A circuit still needs 10 AWG

12 AWG is the standard pairing for a 20A circuit at typical residential distances, and it's genuinely correct for the vast majority of runs. But ampacity rating doesn't account for distance — voltage drop does. On an unusually long 20A run (a detached garage or workshop circuit, for example), 12 AWG can be completely code-legal on ampacity while still exceeding the recommended 3% voltage-drop target, simply because of the distance. In that specific case, stepping up to 10 AWG — even though the circuit is only rated for 20A — reduces the drop enough to clear the target. Don't go by amperage rating alone

A quick rule of thumb ("20A circuit = 12 AWG, 30A circuit = 10 AWG") is right often enough that it's worth knowing — but it's a shortcut for short, typical runs, not a substitute for actually checking voltage drop on anything longer than a normal in-wall run. Run your actual distance and load through the calculator rather than relying on the rule of thumb for anything unusual.
