SEER vs SEER2

SEER2 is a newer testing standard (phased in starting 2023 in the US) that measures efficiency under conditions closer to real-world duct static pressure, replacing the older SEER test. A SEER2 rating typically reads slightly lower than the old SEER rating would have for equivalent equipment — this is a testing-methodology change, not a sign the equipment got less efficient. When comparing two units, confirm they're both rated under the same standard before comparing numbers directly.

What counts as a "good" SEER rating today

US federal minimums have risen over time; older systems (installed 10-20 years ago) commonly sit around SEER 10-13, while current minimums and typical new equipment run SEER 14-16 baseline, with high-efficiency options reaching SEER 20+. Does SEER apply to heating too?

No — SEER is a cooling-mode rating. Heat pumps carry a separate HSPF (Heating Seasonal Performance Factor) rating for their heating mode.

Will a higher SEER unit cool my house faster?

Not necessarily — SEER measures efficiency, not capacity or speed. A correctly sized higher-SEER unit uses less electricity for the same cooling output; it doesn't inherently cool a room quicker than a correctly sized lower-SEER one.

Is it worth replacing a working system just for a better SEER rating?
