Which refrigerant a system uses affects both its charge rate and its regulatory status — worth knowing which one you're working with before pulling a rate from memory:

This calculator's charge-rate field is deliberately left blank of a hardcoded default for exactly this reason — the correct rate depends on which of these (or another refrigerant entirely) your specific equipment uses, and using the wrong one produces a confidently wrong number.
How to use this calculator
Equipment ships pre-charged with refrigerant for a base line set length — both numbers are on the nameplate. If your actual line set is longer than that base length, additional refrigerant is needed at a rate specified by the manufacturer (it varies by line size and refrigerant type — R-410A, R-32, and R-454B all have different published rates). Enter your actual numbers rather than relying on the default values shown, which are illustrative only.
Why this isn't a fixed universal number
Unlike wire ampacity or conduit fill, which follow one national code table, refrigerant charge rates are manufacturer- and refrigerant-specific — there's no single constant that applies across all equipment. That's why every input on this calculator, including the charge rate, is meant to come from your specific unit's documentation rather than a general default.
Worked example
A unit with a 68 oz base charge for 15 ft, an actual line set of 40 ft, and a 0.6 oz/ft additional rate: extra length is 40 − 15 = 25 ft, so additional charge is 25 × 0.6 = 15 oz, for a total of 83 oz.
Frequently asked questions
What if my line set is shorter than the base length?
No charge adjustment is needed — the calculator returns the base charge unchanged, since manufacturers don't typically specify a reduction for a shorter-than-base run.
Does line set diameter affect the charge rate?
Yes — larger diameter line sets hold more refrigerant per foot, so the additional charge rate differs by line size. Always use the rate for your specific line set diameter from the manufacturer's chart, not a generic figure.
Is this precise enough to charge a system without gauges?
No — this gives you the target total charge to weigh in, but proper charging still requires refrigerant gauges, a scale, and verification against superheat/subcooling targets. This is a calculation aid for a licensed technician, not a substitute for proper charging procedure.
