What a BTU actually is
A British Thermal Unit (BTU) is the energy needed to raise one pound of water by one degree Fahrenheit. In HVAC, it's used as a rate — BTU per hour — to describe how much heat a system can add or remove. Every calculator on this site that outputs a BTU figure (room BTU, whole-house load, mini-split sizing) is really describing BTU per hour, even though "per hour" gets dropped in casual use.
Why 12,000 BTU equals 1 ton
A "ton" of cooling is a historical unit — literally the cooling effect of melting one ton of ice over 24 hours, which works out to 12,000 BTU per hour. It has nothing to do with the physical weight of modern equipment; it survives purely as the standard unit for describing central air conditioner and heat pump capacity. Window and portable units are almost always labeled in raw BTU; central systems are almost always labeled in tons — same underlying unit, different convention by equipment category.
Converting between the two
Tons = BTU ÷ 12,000. BTU = Tons × 12,000. A 3-ton central AC is a 36,000 BTU system; an 18,000 BTU mini-split is 1.5 tons. This is exactly the conversion the HVAC load and heat pump sizing calculators run internally to translate a raw BTU load into the tonnage central equipment is actually sold in.

Frequently asked questions
Why do window units use BTU but central systems use tons?
It's convention rather than a technical requirement — smaller equipment has historically been marketed in raw BTU (bigger, more impressive-looking numbers), while the HVAC trade has used tons for central equipment for generations. Both describe the exact same underlying unit of cooling capacity.
Does a bigger BTU/tonnage number always mean better cooling?

Is a ton of heating the same as a ton of cooling?
For a heat pump's cooling mode, yes, same unit.
