What a full Manual J adds that this rule of thumb doesn't
A licensed contractor's Manual J calculation is room-by-room, not whole-house — it sums individual loads for every room based on its exact window area and compass orientation, ceiling height, air infiltration rate (often measured with a blower door test), duct location and leakage, and the local design temperature for both a summer and winter extreme, not just a climate category. This calculator collapses all of that into three inputs on purpose — square footage, climate zone, insulation quality — trading precision for speed. That trade-off is fine for a planning estimate; it's not fine as the final number a contractor orders equipment against.
